Sanko and her grandfather began clearing the debris from where the cherry trees had been while her mother prepared breakfast of pasty rice.

After breakfast they worked until Sanko thought she couldn't lift another stone.  She had just bent over to pick up one more broken limb when she  looked between her legs and saw her mother sitting on the sod between two rice paddies.  The
